Zero or Hole.

The activity was part of the Resilienze Festival 2023 program, a multidisciplinary project that addresses issues related to the major planetary transformations currently underway, exploring different artistic languages to investigate alternative points of view and new perspectives on sustainability. The goal of the workshop was to design a typeface starting from the counterform: the typographic void understood as a constructive element.

During the workshop, participants were guided through all the design phases, from the concept to the creation of their own alphabet. The results of the activities will be published in a dedicated edition and will be exhibited and presented at the Serre dei Giardini Margherita during the Resilienze Festival (June 8–11, 2023).

Participants: Valerio, Silvia, Francesco, Antonio, Alessandro, Dario, Michele, Francesca, Serena, Giacomo, Angela, Margherita, Filippo, Marianna, Matteo, Romina.
Alessio d’Ellena is an independent type designer and graphic designer. He explores the processes of typeface design — and of design itself — as a non-dogmatic practice: stressing forms, stretching concepts, corrupting rules, and misusing tools. He is the co-founder of SUPERNESS, a digital type foundry that is perpetually a work in progress.
